Ceramic Capacitors: The Smart Replacement for Electrolytic Capacitors (Whitepaper)

Capacitors are used to smooth, decouple and filter electronic circuits. This paper focuses on the relative benefits and detractors of electrolytic capacitors in comparison with electrostatic capacitors; specifically aluminum and MnO2 solid electrolyte tantalum electrolytic capacitors vs. multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs). A strategy for use of ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) instead of electrolytic capacitors is presented and a replacement guide is presented to aid the designer in the use of MLCCs in place of electrolytic capacitors for these applications.
